Our team will work jointly with your orthodontist to make sure you receive the best treatment and achieve optimal results.
Symptoms of Jaw Misalignment
When your upper and lower jaws grow at different rates or develop incorrectly, it can cause jaw dysfunction, such as an underbite or overbite. In minor cases of jaw misalignment, you can typically undergo orthodontic treatment. However, if you experience the symptoms below, you may suffer from severe jaw dysfunction and should seek treatment with one of our oral surgeons:
- Breathing problems or sleep apnea
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing food
- Problems opening or closing the mouth completely
- Trouble with your bite
- Chronic pain in your jaw
If you suffer from any of the above complications, it’s important to visit our office for a consultation. Dr. Phillips or Dr. Ray can examine your jaws and determine if corrective jaw surgery is necessary for preserving your oral health and function. After deciding if one or both of your jaws needs repositioning, we will discuss all your treatment options with you before proceeding.
Benefits of Corrective Jaw Surgery
Each patient’s transformation differs after jaw surgery, but in almost all cases, patients experience dramatic positive changes. After corrective jaw surgery, it’s not uncommon to experience the following benefits:
- Reduced pain and discomfort
- Improved jaw function (eating, breathing, etc.)
- Less wear on teeth (due to improved tooth alignment)
- Increase in symmetry of facial features, restoring confidence in your smile
Corrective jaw surgery provides some of the most extensive smile transformations in our office, and our team loves seeing all the positive results.
Orthognathic Surgery Procedure
The primary goals of jaw surgery are usually to improve jaw function and bite alignment while eliminating pain. Improved facial appearance is often a bonus of orthognathic surgery. At Park Cities Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, we believe in the importance of a team-based approach. We work closely with your orthodontist to coordinate and execute treatment to ensure the best results.
The treatment process begins with your orthodontist placing braces to prepare the teeth and jaws for their new position. In most cases, the braces stay on through the entire treatment, which can last anywhere from 18–24 months. We will schedule your surgical appointment for somewhere in the middle of this period, which gives your teeth ample time to move into the proper position. Once your teeth are ready, your oral surgeon will separate the misaligned portion of the jaw and reposition it using small plates or screws designed to integrate with your bone.
During the next several months, the jaw will heal while patients adhere to a soft foods diet. We will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to help you navigate all aspects of your recovery. Your orthodontist will make any final adjustments to the braces needed to complete treatment.
